There is a clear description of the rugged forests and Mahanadi of Chhattisgarh in Ramayana by Valmiki. Shrangi Rishi, who lived in the ashram of Sihava Mountain, located in Ayodhya, had a son-in-law offering at the place of Dasharath, so that Lord Rama, along with all the three brothers, was incarnated on earth. During the time of Rama, they lived in the forests of the Rishi-Muni-Tapasya ashram and during their exile, Ram came here. Mahakavi Kalidas is also believed to have been born in Chhattisgarh. There is a temple called Chaura in the Kawardha principality, situated near Bilaspur district, which is also called mandava-palace. This temple has an inscription of 1349 AD in which the lineage of the kings of the Nag Dynasty is given. King Ramchandra of Nag Dynasty adopted this article. The first king of this lineage is called Ahiraj. The domination of the Nagavans on the territory of Bhormadev continued till the 14th century.

According to Census 2011, out of the total population of Chhattisgarh state, 30.62 percent (78.22 lakh) population belongs to the Scheduled Tribes. The main tribe is Agharia, Gond, Kanwar, Uraon, Halba, Kalar, Marar, Bhatra, Sawra etc. Abujemadia, Kamar, Bagga, Pahari Korawa and Birhore are special backward tribes of the state, apart from them there are other tribes groups, whose population is relatively less.
